Worksop College

Founded as St Cuthberts in 1895, Worksop College was the last of the Woodard schools to be opened. Since then, the school has undergone dramatic growth, with expansion in the 1930s under the Headship of Canon Shirley whose professed aim was to turn the College into “the Eton of the North”.

The school, set in Sherwood Forest on a three hundred acre (120 hectare) parkland estate, is well situated for road, rail and airport travel: just off the A1 and not far from the M1, there are also fast rail links (1½ hours from London King’s Cross).

The majority of pupils enter Worksop College at age 13 (Year 9), but there is also a buoyant entry at age 14 (Year 10), and into the Lower Sixth. As a Woodard School, Worksop College has the security of being part of a significant national charity for education. The Anglican ethos is central to the education of every pupil, although we welcome students from families of all faiths.

Examination results are excellent and a broad curriculum offers choices to suit all pupils at GCSE and A level. We are especially proud of the breadth of our extra curricular activities both of an intellectual nature and in sport where national success has been achieved recently in boys’ and girls’ hockey, cricket and rugby. Creative arts are especially strong and in the past year we have achieved national success in Schools’ Question Time and rocketry.

Facilities inside and outside are impressive, the estate including a 18 hole golf course, 2 astro turf pitches, extensive sports fields, a recently built Sports Hall and an indoor swimming pool. Computer provision is extensive, not only in the two computer centres but also throughout the classrooms and houses. The Science laboratories have recently been completely refurbished, there is a new digital photography suite, a new Modern Language department was opened in 2009 and a new Music School a few years ago.

The Headmaster knows every one of the 400 pupils well, and in each of the eight houses in which they live there is a strong sense of belonging. House facilities are constantly upgraded and include a new girls’ boarding house opened in 2007.

Our aim is to help each individual make the most of their abilities in whatever field they lie.
