Derby High School is among the top independent schools in the country, according to the latest statistics. Only 10 independent schools in the UK achieved higher scores when combining the average number of points awarded per pupil for last year’s A and As-levels and GCSE grades. At Derby High School, the average number of points per pupil for A and As-levels last year was 1,093.9 – the highest across all schools in Derbyshire - while the GCSE score was 422.9.
Head teacher Colin Callaghan said the school was proud of the results achieved by pupils. He said: “I am delighted that, once again, the GCSE and A-level results achieved by our girls last year put Derby High School amongst the leading independent schools in the country. If you combine the two sets of results, for A-level and GCSE, only 10 independent schools in the country performed better than Derby High School at both A-level and GCSE, a fact in which all of our staff take great pride. The experience, skill and dedication of our teaching staff across the whole school give our children the best possible chance to achieve their academic potential and the results only serve to underline the excellence of our provision.”
Mr Callaghan emphasised the importance that the school places on delivering an all-round education to pupils. He said: “I do have my reservations about these league tables, particularly when they are used as a rather blunt instrument to judge the quality of education offered by a particular school. At Derby High we are proud of all the achievements of our children whether they be academic or in any other sphere of school life and we regard education in much broader terms than just examination statistics. The publication of official results for all schools does nonetheless provide a benchmark against which we can measure our academic standards against those of similar schools.”
