A Derby High School pupil has organised a weekend away for her fellow students to give them time to reflect on their faith. Prefect Isabel Cochrane, of Littleover, has planned the event to take place on Saturday January 28 and Sunday January 29 at a residential centre in Edale. The 17-year-old hopes the weekend, with the theme of “Roots, Shoots and Fruits”, will allow them to explore different aspects of Christianity.
Isabel said “The “Roots” part of the weekend will look at where the girls are in Christianity, “Shoots” will examine how faith grows and “Fruits” will cover what we can produce from our faith. There will be workshops and plenty of time for reflection and quiet prayers and we will be having a Eucharist, organised by the girls, on Sunday.”
Prefects at the school are asked to come up with their own targets to achieve and Isabel chose to organise this weekend. She said: “Although we are a Christian school I just felt there weren’t enough big events to celebrate this and I thought this would be something nice to do. Hopefully those who come along will have time to reflect and build on their faith. I go to church and have been away for weekends at the centre in Edale and this has really helped me. I’m also a member of the Youth Council for Derby Diocese.”
Isabel acknowledged that young people might not take an immediate interest in religion. She said: “Often they might attend youth groups organised by Christians and they don’t see it as religion. As a result they might go to church and become interested in faith.”
