Pupils from Smallwood Manor Preparatory School have proved that ‘Uttoxeter’s Got Talent’ after receiving national and local recognition for their singing.
Thomas Eley (10) has won a place in the prestigious National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, whilst the Smallwood Choir won the Turner Cup for the small schools category and came second in both the Mixed Voices U12 and Hymn Singing Class categories at Derby Arts Festival.
The National Children’s Choir of Great Britain formed in 1998 and senior members perform around the world. Thomas secured his place following a highly competitive musical audition, which assessed both his sight reading and singing ability. He will now attend residential courses twice a year where he will learn about singing techniques and different musical styles.
“We are extremely proud of Thomas’ achievements – places at the National Children’s Choir are extremely sought after and this will give him the opportunity to learn alongside top musicians as well as perform both nationally and internationally,” said Mrs O’Brien, director of music.
“This is the 11th year that a chorister from Smallwood has secured a place on the Choir and I’m delighted that our musical achievements are being recognized nationally.”
But this isn’t Smallwood Manor’s only musical success – Derby Arts Festival seeks to celebrate the performances of amateur musicians, singers and dancers. It is now in its 102nd year and has attracted more than 1,500 entries across eight different sections.
To win the Turner Cup, the choir sang ‘Rolling down to Rio’ and ‘Wings’ and they were assessed on their musicality, presentation, communication and enthusiasm. Smallwood Manor’s Woodwind Band also took part in the competition.
Mrs O’Brien, director of music added: “The choir sang beautifully and I am delighted that they were rewarded for their efforts by winning one category and coming second in the other two at the prestigious Derby Arts Festival. Both the Choir and the Band had rehearsed to perfect their performances, singing and blending well in the ensemble.
“The festival is really important because it gives the children an opportunity to perform in front of a large audience and compete against other schools.”
