Teachers at Denstone College put on two rock concerts for pupils at the school, and raised over £300 for charity in the process. The money raised will go to three schools in South Africa, providing funds for much needed books, stationery, and sports equipment.
A five piece band and a chorus of thirteen staff were involved in the concerts, during which they performed well known songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, including numbers by the Beatles, the Eagles, and Bob Dylan.
The band was led by Director of Music, Mike Skipper, on keyboards, and featured Barry Gillions, Chris Skipper and Jules Wilson, playing guitars, with Deniz Onac thumping out the rhythm on drums. There were some memorable moments which include Alun James’ Elvis Presley impression, Rachel Dubsky’s performance of “Diamonds and Rust”, a Joan Baez hit, and Matt Bennett’s singing of Van Morrison’s “Moondance”.
Jules Wilson, chaplain at Denstone, said afterwards: “The concert was great fun, but most important was the money raised for the schools we are supporting in South Africa. We all want the best education for our children, and the money raised will help to provide children in another country with some of the basic educational needs. We are aiming to raise £2000 by the end of the year, and if anyone would like to contribute to this very worthwhile cause please can they contact me on 01889 590484.”
