Set in 550 acres of spectacular countryside, overlooking the sea near Brighton, Lancing is one of Britain’s leading independent boarding schools for boys and girls aged 13-18. It is famous for its impressive nineteenth century gothic chapel, many other beautiful buildings and for its happy, purposeful atmosphere.
Lancing is quite a small school, with just over 500 pupils living in a compact campus with all its facilities in easy reach of the seven comfortable boarding houses. It is a friendly, busy, tolerant community with an excellent tradition of pastoral care and individual support within a well-disciplined Christian ethos. We are determined that all our pupils should make full use of what Lancing offers in order to reach their full potential.
Academic work is at the heart of school life and standards are high. There is a broad and varied curriculum to GCSE and A Level, well equipped and with stimulating teachers. Candidates for places are assessed academically and expected to have reached a good standard of English and Mathematics.
Music and Drama are particular strengths, with regular productions in the Theatre and fine choral and orchestral performances. A new Art School, to develop an already thriving department, will open in 2008. A very wide range of sport is offered, there is a Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and voluntary community service. Among many other out of school activities is the College Farm where pupils have experience of looking after animals. There are frequent expeditions locally and overseas.
Lancing is very much a ‘local’ boarding school. Apart from about 20% who come from a wide variety of other countries, most of our pupils live within a fifty mile radius, including Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and south London. Girls and boys are totally immersed in school life during the week, but can go home most weekends. Day pupils benefit from a boarding structure in pastoral support and time for out-of-school activities. Many stay in occasionally or convert to boarding. There is frequent contact with parents and school is an extension of family life and a stepping-stone to adult independence.
Lancing is easily accessible by road or rail from London, major airports and the Channel ports.
