There are 557 pupils at Derby High School of whom 313 are in the Senior School, which is for girls only, and 244 are in the Juniors and Kindergarten which are both co-educational.
The Junior School and Kindergarten follow an enhanced national curriculum course. KS1and KS2 SAT’s are taken but the school uses different forms of assessment in Year 6. There is considerable enrichment in the curriculum with a wide variety of sports, music, drama and other activities available both within the curriculum and at club time. French, Music and PE are taught by specialists.
The Senior School offers courses in Art and Design, Biology, Economics & Business Studies, Chemistry, Design Technology, Drama, English Language and Literature, French, General Studies, Geography, German, History, Home Economics, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Psychology, Physics, Religious Studies, Spanish and Theatre Studies. The curriculum is enhanced by activities such as Young Enterprise, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and the charitable work undertaken in Ethiopia and Thailand. Sports, drama and music are also strengths. The opening of a new Sixth Form and Music Centre in September 2009 greatly enhanced the facilities across the school.
The main points of entrance are at 3+, 11+ and 16+ where Scholarships and Assisted Places are available. Entrance is by examination and interview. Entrance at other ages is by assessment and takes place by arrangement.
The school has an active Christian ethos and broadly follows the teaching of the Church of England, but pupils of all faiths are welcomed and valued.
